PowerMat – bringing us wireless charging

iPhone 4 PowerMat

Towards the latter end of last year I had the pleasure,  and I don’t use that term lightly, of using a PowerMat for my iPhone 4. PowerMat is a wireless charging tool that connects to your iPhone via a made-to-fit case that snuggles around it and connects in a simple “drop and charge” motion. Some have commented in other reviews that they have found the case a little bulky, but to be honest I didn’t. I quite liked the additional security of the case around my iPhone. I will however point out that this case is by no means as good as a proper case for preventing accidents and the chaps over at PowerMat make that quite clear in their outreach.

What devices does it work on?

The PowerMat team have also made the device accessible for BlackBerry users (Bold 9700 Series and Curve 8500/9300 Series) and fear not if you have an iPhone 3G or 3GS, you can also find wireless chargers for these too. Even your iPod has its own specially adapted wireless charging system and you can also purchase adapters for the Nintendo DS – so you can chat, browse, game it up and boogie on down to your hearts content without fear of running out of juice.  We’re hoping that the team plans to add some other devices to its library too, as we’re not all BB or iPhone heads. We have had a search on the rumour mill that is the Internet and we can’t find anything pointing to any particular device, although our friends over the pond in the US are already enjoying the delight for its Motorola Droid X and DROID X2,the HTC EVO 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S 4G…mass market/techie devices like HTC, Samsung and Windows Phone 7 must all be high on the companies wish list for the UK.

Can I use it for multiple devices at the same time?

If you’ve lots of different devices and don’t want to pay out for individual chargers, we would suggest you invest in a “Mat”, this mat connects to receivers on a case/battery door of your device (see images below) and mean you can charge multiple devices from the same Mat.  You can also pick up a PowerMat Powercube, which hosts eight different tips that allow you to charge “hundreds” of devices – however, I think this kind of defeats the object of “wireless charging” i.e. if I am using a tip (see image below) why not just use a normal charger hey? Anyway…the mats come in two forms, the portable mat and the home and office mat – with obvious size differences indicated by their names.

How does it work?

The science bit – kind of – the wireless charging occurs via magnets, they align between the receiver (the bit on your phone) and the Mat access point. PowerMat calls this the RFiD Handshake – like! Once charging is initiated, a unique audio confirmation occurs and also sounds once you detach the device.  When your phone/MP3 reaches its full charge the Mat will automatically turn off to save energy.

Here’s a fairly comical advert they have running in the US at the moment:

Powermat Commercial – What the Bleep?

How much will it cost me?

If you’ve got a Blackberry we would definitely recommend this as a cool gadget to add to your collection, as it seamlessly fits on the back of the device via a new battery door – much more so then for the iPhone, which you have to add a whole case to the device. Costs range fairly widely and you can find good deals if you shop around, we have also noticed some second hand ones on well known sites with low price tags. RRP wise, we have listed below the costs for all the receivers and Mats, including special bundles:

£39.99 for all bundles which includes a 1X mat and receiver for:

  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS/3G
  • BlackBerry Curve
  • BlackBerry Bold

Nintendo case: £29.99

iPod dock: £34.99

Mat Portable: £79.99
3X Mat (New version of the Matt Home/Office) also comes with a powercube: £79.99
2X Mat Portable with a Powercube included: £59.99

I have a phone accessories addiction. There are tons for the iPhone, not so many for the Blackberry unfortunately.

I thought I would share with you my favourite cases on the market at the moment from case maker Proporta. From Quicksilver to Ted Baker, they have super stylish covers and sleeves for everyone!

The case I’m sporting at the moment is a retro looking Quicksilver number. It’s a hard case and fits nicely on the phone. All covers come with screen protectors for that added bit of extra protection.

Quicksilver Hard Case - £29.95

Other Proporta favourites of mine:

Ben Allen Skull Case - £19.95

Ted Baker Hard Case - £29.95

Another popular brand in the Proporta repertoire is Ted Baker. Colourful and chic… Definitely one for the girls! They also do some fabulous leather pouches and fully covered leather iPhone cases. With a variation of designs, there’s something for everyone, even the boys!

The Royal Wedding Edition - £19.95

Last but not least, the Proporta Special Edition Union Jack case for the Royal Wedding. Celebrate the Royal Wedding in style by sporting this awesome leather pouch.

Proporta really seem to have cases for phones and laptops alike covered. With Proporta, there really is a case for anyone – Guy or gal, young or old, plain or colourful… certainly my first port of call these days!

Best Car Gadgets

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Rachel Miller from moneysupermarket.com reviews the best car gadgets on the market!

Tom Tom Go Live 1000

The Tom Tom Live 1000 is a sat nav which will no doubt be on the top of the Christmas list for people who love car gadgets. No matter how good a sense of direction we believe we have there comes a time when you will need a little help with how to get somewhere. This Tom Tom has proved that the sat nav is still a must have car gadget, despite clever phone apps which claim to do the same thing as the traditional satellite navigation technology. One thing that Tom Tom has managed to improve greatly is their navigation efficiency. It has never been easier to create your route- you can now build your own menu of your favourite functions, making it easier to use. Tom Tom fans will be instantly at home with menu and
directions as their icons are still the same but formatted to be easier to use. The voice recognition  makes this process even quicker, without the need to actually touch the device.

The stand out feature of the Go Live 1000 is the HD Traffic Service that comes with it. Your sat nav will  be able to warn you about congestion and traffic queues before it’s too late. The HD service tracks the signals of mobile phones in cars, meaning that increasing volume in signals in a specific area will indicate a traffic queue. The Go Live has been said to have the most accurate Traffic Service on the market at the moment, and is definitely worth investing in if you commute or drive a lot.

Breathalyzer Key Ring

Most of us like a few glasses of wine when we meet up with friends or go for a meal, which imposes the problem of transport. It’s probably a lot safer to drive to your destination than to wait in dark train stations or bus stops, and can be cheaper than a pricey taxi at the end of the night. However, drink driving laws have never been stricter and for your own safety, as well as others it’s advisable not to drink any alcohol when driving. However if you do fancy a drink this gadget will be on hand to tell you when you’ve had too much. The Breathalyzer key ring is a nifty, portable way to make sure that you’re under the limit, and will light up either red or green depending on how high your alcohol levels are. If the key ring shows the red light, that indicates that you should look for an alternative way of getting home, but if it stays on green you’re good to go.

Electric Windscreen Scraper

We’ve all been there- it’s cold, dark and icy and all you want to do is get in the car and turn the heater up. But first you need to get all the ice off the windscreen before you can go anywhere meaning you need to get out the car scraper or the credit card; if you don’t have a scraper. As well as making your hands like ice, we of the fairer sex are much likely to be shorter than our male counterparts and reaching the centre of the windscreen can be tough. In comes the electric scraper- one of the best winter car gadgets out there. The electric scraper has an in-built heater which will help to melt the ice, making it easier to scrape off. You can also extend the length of the scraper to tackle those hard to reach spots. And the cherry on the cake has to be the light so you’ll be able to see on those dark mornings. No need for batteries either- you can charge this gadget in your cigarette lighter socket!

Car Finder App

If you’ve got a smart phone and drive a lot and sometimes struggle to remember where you have
parked, this is the app for you! Most drivers have been in a position where they’ve parked their car,
gone shopping and come back to find they can’t remember where they left their car. This is particularly
difficult in big car parks at busy times. It’s not a sign of premature memory loss- car parks can be
confusing. The Car Finder app gets switched on as you leave your car and locks your positions via GPS
in its system. There is even an opportunity to make notes like what floor you’re parked on, or your
parking space number. When you return from your activity you simply scan your smart phone over the
sea of parked cars and it will tell you how to get to your car- magic. You’ll never lose your car again. Or
embarrassingly report your car as stolen to the police…

Car Gadget Holder

This one is a must have for anyone who has an iPhone or a smart phone which they use while driving. Whether you use your smart phone with a Bluetooth connecter to make calls when driving, or whether you have an iPod Car Kit to listen to your music, you’ll want your iPod, iPhone or smart phone to be visible when driving. There are hundreds of gadget holders for cars on the market and you can buy them relatively cheaply. Just remember to take the holder off your window when you’re not in your car so potential thieves don’t think you have valuables in the car.

Remember that buying new tech and gadgets for your car can provoke thieves and vandals, so always be sure to hide your kit when you’re not using your car. Always check with your car insurance provider that your tech will be covered on your policy. You can compare car insurance at moneysupermarket.com.

V-Moda Crossfades

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

V-Moda have done it again!

V-Moda, as you may have read in my previous post on their Remix earphones, must be THE most fashionable ear/ headphones on the market. The in ear phones are good, but the V-Moda Crossfade headphones are in a league of their own.

They look expensive, feel luxurious and sound amazing! Most headphones feel big and bulky, but I actually feel quite funky wearing these. They are a great size and as with other V-Moda products, a lot of thought has gone into them.

V-Moda Crossfades - The must have this Xmas

As well as looking the part, they also act the part. Sound quality is of a high level and they’re incredibly durable and ‘built to last’. They come in an exoskeleton case for extra protection when you’re on the move.

From their website to their products, V-Moda ooze quality and style. As you might expect, there is a moderatley high price tag, but you are paying for quality and with Carphone Warehouses special offer, you can pick up these beauties at £189.99. For music buffs, I think this is a bargain not to mention a VERY awesome Chrismas present! Flawless!!! Top marks :)

The iPhone case review …

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

When it comes to handbags and accessories, us girls are pretty spoilt for choice. So why should we ask for less when it comes to our gadgets … Luckily, we have some iPhone cases to glam our GnG mobiles phones with.

First on my desk is from QDOS, a French company based in Paris (daaaarling) and they specialise in making accessories for our most prised of possession, our iPhones. We’ve got our hands on their its designs for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The above case is called ‘The Quilted Slip’ and snuggles the device in a protective slim case that fits in our pocket with minimal bulk. I think that is about the best thing i can say about it … ‘minimal bulk’ that is… I’m a huge fan of the form factor of the sleek and curvaceous iPhone design and cases usually disrupt this beauty. However, i have also seen the disastrous effect of a dropped non-cased iPhone, its not pretty. For that reason I am keen to keep my device protected.

The described ‘patent leather finish’ however doesn’t leave much to be desired and I have to admit that it is ‘patently’ obvious that the finish actually makes the product very tacky. Its finish in fact, looks like something you are more likely to find in a 6 year olds fancy dress box. I do however like the pull-tab system that I have admired from other cases, making it quick and easy to access the device from the case…

Another thing I don’t like about the case is the lack of access to the phone, a big no no in my books. At most you can plug in your headphones, the rest is engulfed by the plasticky case.

My verdict 2/10….I prefer my iPhone like a lot of things, naked!

The next case is made specifically for the iPhone 3G and 3GS and adds a much needed injection of fun and creativity to an otherwise mundane job of protecting the iPhone. The case is designed by Incipio (myincipio.com) whose cases I have drooled over many a time. Its not just the iPhone the company has on it’s books, but also iPad, BlackBerry and other smartphones. These cases are for once designed on fun and functionality.

The Incipio case is called the Dottie, aptly named due to the silicon discs that slot into the back of the case … these colourful cases come in a range of colours including purple, black, navy, red, charcoal and the one I have, white…with a variety of coloured discs to play around with. The iPhone slots snugly into the case and makes me feel secure that a drop or knock would not have me yelping in fear of a cracked iPhone.

As well as doing a very good job of protecting the phone within it’s rubber mould, you can also customise the way that the back of the case looks via rubber discs that pop out. With the 15 multi coloured discs you can create patterns or just keep it simple with the all the same colour. You could even play Connect Four ;-)

It seems it is not only me that has gone potty for the Dottie, the case won an award for Best of Show 2010 iLounge … aww, like a little puppy at Crufts! (minus the crazed owners, well apart from me). All in all I would give this case an 8 out of 10 for the sheer fun and I would proudly bring it out on a night out.
